Road Safety Contracts has been carrying out gully emptying for over 25 years across Northern Ireland for the DRD Roads Service and other private contractors. This has allowed us to gain a wealth of knowledge and expertise in drain maintenance including gully emptying, drain jetting and CCTV surveys.
The purpose of the gully is to help prevent flooding in adverse weather conditions. Well maintained gullies help reduce flooding and road accidents.
A gully is a chamber in the ground with a sump that collects the grit and spoils and allows the excess water to drain to the main sewer or the water way system. The gully outlet pipe normally has a u-bend, which is sealed with water to prevent foul odours arise from the drain. It is normally covered with a metal grating and is usually found at the edge of a road but they can also be found in pedestrian areas.
To clean a gully the operative inserts a boom pipe in to gully chamber and removes all debris including silt, sludge, spoil, mud, stones and any foreign object from the gully chamber and the mouth of the gully outlet pipe. This is vacuumed up by the gully suction boom. The gully outlet pipe is then flushed with fresh water to ensure the drainage system is functioning correctly. The lid is then replaced and washed with clean water. The contents are then taken to a designated recycling/landfill site.
We also provide a high pressure jetting service. These units are ideal for the removal of heavy sludge, silt or fats and clear any drain blockages. The high pressure jet heads are used to blast the inside of the pipes cutting through accumulated grease, waste and debris. They can also cut through roots which cultivate within drains
Road Safety Contracts offer a large range of CCTV surveying systems. A camera unit can also be used to view any possible blockages, cracked pipes or for further investigation of drainage problems. We provide a CD report of the investigation.
With the aid of cameras we are able to:
- Check for blockage including tree roots
- To determine the exact location of branches and connections of the drainage system
- Checking the structural condition of the drainage system and looking for any defects
